Started in 2002, measuring up to high standards of Panjab University, the institute has set quality standards in technical education. The highly qualified faculty and dedicated staff is the backbone of institute. Well equipped laboratories provide practical industrial exposure to the students. State of art computer facilities, independent broad band internet connectivity provide ample scope for students to learn round the clock. Wi-Fi has reduced locational dependence of the students. In fact, students with laptops avail the facility in the institute as well as in the hostels. With the updation/revision of syllabi in interaction with academia and industry, more practical activities have been made computer based.

Institute has good liaison with industry. Bharti group of industries has set up a Bharti Chair in Telecommunication & IT to boost research in Telecommunication. The institute is member of Campus Connect programme of Infosys Technologies Ltd., Bangalore. The programme supports Faculty training in industry, project guidance to students, curricula inputs, industry perspective of teaching-learning and expert lecture inputs. UIET has many more MOUs and interactions with the industry and academia like IBM, Sun Microsystem, IMTECH etc.
